This finally leads us to the subject of this very special article, ScummVM for Nintendo 64. It was also built in easily portable code, leading ScummVM to become one of the most frquently ported open source applications. ScummVM was started in 2001 and at first focused on LucasArts titles, but quickly expanded to cover many different engines by different studios who developed point 'n click adventure games. That's when ScummVM comes into the picture. Those games received many ports to different competing systems of the time, but with the fall of LucasArts in the 2000s, these games would end up falling into obscurity with no official re-releases. Maniac Mansion, Monkey Island, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis and many others would all become fan favorites of the genre. For the PC crowd, they became famous for their excellent point 'n click adventure games. Some of these games were also released on Windows PCs, a platform most would consider to be the homebase for LucasArts. For us N64 fans, they're best known for their groundbreaking Star Wars games, even Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine turned out seriously great. ScummVM is a great tool to relive old classics on current computers, with the added bonus of being able to modify some of the sound and graphics features using a nice interface from which you can access your list of games.Growing up in the late 90s, one of my favorite game companies was LucasArts. What’s really interesting is that many of the games, long considered abandon-ware, have been distributed freely by their original authors, so you can freely download and play such games as Lure of the Temptress, DreamWeb and Flight of the Amazon Queen, all available on Uptodown. The list of supported games is huge, and each new version adds new graphic engines beyond the well-known Scumm system developed by LucsArts and used on games such as Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle and Sam & Max or Sierra’s SCI which was used on the King’s Quest sage, just to mention a few. Once there, you can modify several settings options, including both sound and graphics, thus letting you customize just how you want to enjoy the game by applying post-processing filters in order to improve the image. In order to use the program, you’ll need the game’s original files, which you’ll have to find using ScummVM’s game add-on system to then add it to your library. ScummVM is an interpreter that lets you play an endless number of classic point-and-click graphical adventure games from the early 90’s developed by studios such as LucasArts, Sierra, Westwood and others, on modern computers.
